I have found that for me personally, my faith is the center of my life and all other things are the branches that grow and hopefully bear fruit. At this 55+ age I have learned that connecting with people, making choices in truth with purpose, and being able to give and receive joy helps me define my simple life. There is no perfecting this life, there is only following in the well defined footsteps of Jesus. I have found making this bold statement necessary in a world full of radio static and picture perfect images on screens that mimic happiness. I spent a lot of time worrying about things I can’t control and running someone else’s race.
Staying connected with my family is the place where I want to spend my time and my money. My children and grandchildren are gifts from above. Whether it is hosting family gatherings, planning for birthdays, or the holidays, I just want to soak up every moment.
Maintaining relationships with my extended family and my closest friends are incredibly important, as well. It is our people group and support circles that get us through all that life can bring. How blessed are we to not have to do life alone? If you are alone please reach out to someone, or on this blog, so that you will have some connection. God does not want us to do life alone. Alone doesn’t mean “simple”, it means recluse.
There are many places to get involved and build community. Activities can connect us. Church organizations, hobbies, walking at the park, joining a book club, all can help us find our people. Volunteering can help with purpose. Getting out of our comfort zone and serving one another with our gifts and talents can help our community. I wanted to list some places to try, if you are not sure where to start, or if you are new to an area:
YMCA and Fitness Centers
Library and Healthcare Hubs
Gardening Club
Lakes or Beaches
Learning Programs/ College or University
Art Studio or Hobby Classes
Walking and Nature Trails
Music or Language Classes
Church and Prayer Groups
Cruises, RV trips, Local Festivals
The number one thing to seek a simple life is choosing to get involved in things that enrich your life. Surround yourself with things that bring you joy! Prioritize your health, celebrate milestones with loved ones, and seek out opportunities to give and share your gifts! It’s so simple!
